Is Captain America Saving Superhero Movies? The Rundown, July 16-22, 2011.
Posted on by Rebekah Iliff
Now that the 4th of July is over, I can continue my usual, hyper-critical, love/hate relationship with America. Previews for the new superhero film, “Captain America,” are colonizing commercial spots on every TV network. Why Captain America’s production team chose the white-guy-from-Brooklyn-running-around-blowing-shit-up-saving-the-world-and-getting-the-girl storyline is beyond me. Captain America should be removing Native Americans from their stolen homeland, kidnapping and raping Africans stolen from their homeland, murdering Asian immigrants for succeeding economically and forcing Mexican immigrants into a racialized underclass. Or, to make it less blatantly offensive, Captain America should be 10% Mexican, have a British accent, several half-Black illegitimate kids, an Asian wife and a penchant for “Native American” tribal prints.
