US Presidential Election 2012 Apps

Obama For America (OFA) has released an app for iOS and Android to promote voter engagement.

Per TechCrunch, the app streams campaign news, voting locations, registration information and volunteer opportunities, and synchronizes with Facebook, Twitter, email, SMS, and a dashboard.

It also allows for campaign donations and for voters to see the latest ID laws in their state and download the names of voters in their neighborhood, among other capabilities.

As Michael Shear wrote for The New York Times, the app may “…replace the ubiquitous clipboard for Democratic canvassers.”

The Mitt Romney campaign has also developed an app for iOS and Android, “Mitt’s VP”, through which they will announce Romney’s choice for a Vice President candidate.

The OFA app is the first that provides access to canvassing lists, and the Romney campaign app is the first to offer exclusive information from a US Presidential candidate, showcasing the rise of mobile apps across industries and sectors.
